Frederic Hauge
President, The Bellona Foundation

In 1986, at the age of 20, Norwegian Frederic Hauge established the Bellona Foundation. Through investigation, documentation, legal action and non violent activism, Bellona has dramatically impacted the way Norwegians think of and relate to environmental matters. More importantly, the Foundation has facilitated concrete changes in environmental policies among political and industrial leaders in Norway and internationally. Today, Bellona is as international scientific and technology-based environmental NGO with 70 employees is Norway, Russia, the EU and the USA. In 2007 Hauge was elected Vice Chairman of the European Commission’s Technology Platform for Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP), and the same year TIME Magazine named him a Hero of the Environment.

Michael Pawlyn
Founder and Director, Exploration Architecture
Exploration Architecture was established by Michael Pawlyn in 2007 to focus exclusively on environmentally sustainable projects that take their inspiration from nature. From 1997 to 2007 Pawlyn worked with Grimshaw Architects, and was instrumental in the design development of the Eden Project. He was responsible for leading the design of the Biomes and proposals for a third major climatic enclosure. Michael Pawlyn has lectured widely on the subject of sustainable design in the UK and abroad, and in May 2005 delivered a talk at the Royal Society of Arts with Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface. In 2006, he was appointed to represent Grimshaw as a Founder Member of the UK Green Building Council and in 2007 was elected as a committee member of The Edge, a think-tank dedicated to addressing important political, social and professional issues.

Charlie Paton
Managing Director, Seawater Greenhouse Ltd

Charlie Paton has an impressive track record in innovation, research and development. His extensive understanding of a wide range of technologies and the intricate mechanism of photosynthesis led to the concept of the Seawater Greenhouse. He has been actively engaged in the development of this concept. Paton has received a number of awards for his work, including the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2006 Sustainability Award, the Tech Award, Technology for the benefit of Mankind, Technical Museum of San Jose CA (2006), The St Andrews Prize for the Environment (2007) and Courvoisier/Observer’s The Future 500 Science and Innovation winner (2008).

Joakim Hauge
Scientific Advisor, Bellona Norway

Joakim Hauge has a Cand. Scient. in biology, and received his degree from Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis at the University of Oslo, Norway. Hauge has experience from work on a number of environmental issues in various NGOs. Before joining The Bellona Foundation in 2008, Hauge worked as a private advisor on industrial biomasses, with a special focus on algae. In his work for Bellona, Hauge is currently involved in international projects aiming to evaluate the energy and environmental potential of future biomasses, such as the Sahara Forest Project. He represents Bellona in The Algal Biomass Organization.
